3 Ways to Accomplish More, In Less Time

Uncategorized Sep 06, 2016

I have been chasing two rabbits, and you may be too.

I am learning to extend my time and energy, not by doing more, but by doing less. Being busy doesn't always mean I am being productive. What I have learned is that intense focus and energy placed into achieving one goal is 10x more powerful than focus and energy that is divided into accomplishing multiple. There is an old saying that says, "If you chase two rabbits, both will get away.” I have always known this, but have never applied it. The key is laser focusing your time and energy into achieving your desired outcome. Here are three ways you can accomplish more, in less time.

1. Get in "The Zone" more often

When you are "in the zone" your best work is created. You lose track of time and everything becomes simpler. Being "in the zone" is the intersection between creativity, skills, and cause. I’m sure you have noticed this when you reflect on your greatest work and/or accomplishments, they were achieved by absolute focus into achieving a specific goal. You may have also noticed those days where you were completely swamped with tasks, but at the end of the day you may have felt like nothing was accomplished. There was no zone because there were too many rabbits.

2. Don't react to everything

Reacting kills momentum and makes it hard to get anything done. Don't become dependent on the drug of urgency. Did you know that when we see a notification for an email, text message, or Facebook notification, we get a small rush of dopamine. Dopamine is the same substance that is associated with addiction. It's no wonder why we have such a hard time distinguishing between what is important and what is urgent. We are easily distracted, and distracted individuals produce less. Focus is key.

3. Learn to say no

Learn to say no. I have always found my plate completely full of things I am involved in, and this has hindered my effectiveness because I didn't know how to say no. Learning to say no is not a bad thing, it boosts your effectiveness in your concentrated areas because it allows you to say yes to the more important things.

This sounds career oriented, but in fact career goals are low on my list after my faith, family, and friends. My time is valuable, and learning to use it more effectively is my priority.

I declare:

  • That I will focus my efforts to achieve my goals without distractions.
  • That I will learn to do more effective work in a lesser amount of time as I continue to laser focus my energy into specific actions.
  • That my focus will not only improve my performance but will create more opportunities and time to improve my relationships in my faith, family and friends.
  • That my focused energy will allow me to leave my work at the front door when I arrive home everyday and I can create a new focused energy in the form of quality time for my kids and my wife.
  • That my time on this earth is valuable and given to me by God to be used effectively.
  • That I will create time for more spiritual development, where I can continually write and reflect on God’s goodness. Where I can and sit in wonder, in amazement, and in gratitude for the blessings God has given.
  • That you too, will have heightened focus and accomplish what is most important to you.

Have a great week!
